Furthermore, SSE manages, operates, and expands the high-voltage electricity transmission grid that serves northern Scotland and its outlying islands. Its diverse business interests also include utility contracting, telecommunications, energy market trading, insurance services, property management, and the provision of maintenance solutions. The company adopted its current name, SSE plc, in September 2011, having previously been known as Scottish and Southern Energy plc.
