Stock Exchanges Around The World
There are hundreds of stock exchanges around the world, including those in the U.S. However, many of those stock exchanges are small, or trade options or securities that are outside of our scope. So we currently have in our database stocks traded on 60 stock exchanges around the world, including 6 stock exchanges in the U.S.
The global stock market is valued at over $100 trillion, with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) leading at over $30 trillion in market capitalization, followed by NASDAQ at approximately $25 trillion. Other major exchanges include the Japan Exchange Group, Shanghai Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Euronext, and the London Stock Exchange. The top 10 largest stock exchanges collectively represent over 80% of global equity market value. Asian markets, particularly in Japan, China, and India, have been growing their share of global equity trading significantly.
As explained in our article what is a symbol, "symbols" around the world are not unique. So when referencing an international stock, you can't always just use a stock's symbol. For example, symbol "1722" is Misawa Homes on the Japanese stock market and Taiwan Fertilizer Co. on the Taiwanese stock market. So a system of referencing the stock exchange that a stock is traded on becomes important.
Unfortunately, there is not a universally accepted way to reference stock exchanges around the world, as there are several competing systems in place: 1) Every stock exchange has a four character alphanumeric "MIC" under ISO 10383; or 2) Bloomberg, one of the most widely used professional data services, uses its own set of short exchange codes (often two characters) to identify stock exchanges; or 3) Google Finance uses its own set of exchange prefixes (such as NASDAQ, NYSE, TYO, TPE, etc.) which can be seen on the Google Finance disclaimer page;
In our database, we use the MIC code from ISO 10383 as the primary way to reference each stock exchange, since it is the closest thing to a universally accepted standard in institutional finance. The table below lists the stock exchanges we currently cover, along with their MIC codes and other identifiers where available.
