Aviva, a prominent diversified insurer, trades its shares on the London Stock Exchange. Its extensive history dates back to the 17th century with the establishment of Hand-in-Hand, a mutual organization formed in the wake of the Great Fire of London to offer fire protection. Hand-in-Hand, which notably insured iconic London landmarks like London Bridge, the British Museum, and Lambeth Palace, was subsequently acquired by Commercial Union in 1905. Aviva's life insurance division traces its beginnings to the early 18th century through the creation of Amicable, another mutual society dedicated to safeguarding widows and children from the financial hardship caused by a loss of life.
