Profile

Sumitomo Corporation operates as a diversified global trading and investment conglomerate. Its extensive operations are organized into six distinct business units: Metal Products; Transportation & Construction Systems; Infrastructure; Media & Digital; Living Related & Real Estate; and Mineral Resources, Energy, Chemical & Electronics. The company's activities are broad and varied. Its Metal Products division supplies a range of metallic materials, including steel sheets and tubular goods. Within Transportation & Construction Systems, Sumitomo handles the full lifecycle—from manufacturing, leasing, and sales to servicing and financing—for ships, aircraft, motor vehicles, construction equipment, and their components. The Infrastructure segment encompasses power generation, renewable energy project development (including engineering, procurement, and construction), and electricity retail. Additionally, it drives urban development through projects involving industrial facilities, water systems, transportation infrastructure, airports, smart cities, environmental solutions, and storage battery technologies. It also develops and operates industrial parks, arranges insurance, and provides logistics services. Media & Digital boasts a broad portfolio spanning both traditional and advanced digital sectors, from cable television, programming distribution, movies, and digital content to 5G technologies, e-commerce, and TV shopping. This segment also includes mobile phone services, ICT platforms, digital solutions, venture capital investments, and smart communications infrastructure. In Living Related & Real Estate, Sumitomo directly addresses consumer needs through the operation of food supermarkets and drugstore chains. It also plays a significant role in the trade of cement and building materials, as well as engaging in comprehensive real estate businesses. Finally, the Mineral Resources, Energy, Chemical & Electronics segment is deeply involved in the exploration, development, and trading of a vast range of natural resources, such as coal, iron ore, manganese, uranium, non-ferrous and precious metals, petroleum, natural gas, and liquefied natural gas, alongside commodity derivative transactions. This segment further deals in a diverse array of chemical products (including non-ferrous metal products, LPG, plastics, organic and inorganic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, fertilizers, and veterinary drugs), electronic components (silicon wafers, LEDs, storage batteries), and provides electronics manufacturing services, coupled with strategic investing activities. Established in 1919, Sumitomo Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
