Profile

Algoma Central Corporation, founded in 1899 and headquartered in St. Catharines, Canada, is a prominent marine transportation entity. Initially known as Algoma Central Railway, the company adopted its current name in 1990. Its core business revolves around owning and operating a diverse fleet of vessels dedicated to transporting both dry and liquid bulk cargo primarily across Canada's Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system. The company's activities are strategically divided into six segments: Domestic Dry-Bulk, Product Tankers, Ocean Self-Unloaders, Global Short Sea Shipping, Investment Properties, and Corporate operations. Algoma's extensive fleet includes specialized self-unloading bulk carriers. It also manages a robust tanker division responsible for the distribution of liquid petroleum products throughout the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence waterway, and into Atlantic Canada. Furthermore, the corporation operates eight ocean-going self-unloading ships, which transport essential bulk commodities like coal for energy production, crushed aggregates for construction, gypsum utilized in wallboard manufacturing, iron ore for the steel industry, and salt for road de-icing. Beyond its primary shipping services, Algoma Central offers management services to third-party clients. The company also holds real estate assets, including a shopping center, within its Investment Properties portfolio. Its broad customer base spans various sectors, including iron and steel, aggregate, cement and building material, and salt producers. The company also serves agricultural product distributors, alongside oil refiners, wholesale distributors, and major consumers of petroleum products.
